In 1883, twenty Belgian artists or artists working in Belgium, who were close to Symbolist art but equally open to all avant-garde currents, came together as an avant-garde artists' circle under the name Les Vingt. By organising exhibitions, readings and concerts, in which many external artists also took part, they contributed significantly to a lively artistic exchange and the development of modernism in Belgium.
